[Mar. 17th, 2008|02:35 pm] |
Awhile Back I had Pandemic in the third tournament of Fist-a-cuffs. I had completely intended to go into the fourth tourney and Chris Schweizer and I had talked a little bit about what we wanted to do. I had sketched this up awhile back but had never really finished it up so I thought I'd play with it this morning. Unfortunately I couldn't get the scan to get exactly what I wanted...but I used some warm gray markers for the tone although none of that is really coming through now. I am really lazy about using different mediums then just a pen and pencil so I thought I'd experiment. It's not a huge break from tradition with me...but it's a start....I hope. |

I finished two issues of Sabrina the teenage Witch about two months ago and from the looks of things the above issue(#93) will debut on April 16th. So for everyone interested mark your calendars and pick one up! Of course you have plenty of time to wait for it now....but in anticipation here are a few little panel details from this issue. I'll post more from the next after this one sees light. |

| Tarzan! |
[Mar. 7th, 2008|12:33 pm] |
I threw this together Wednesday morning for Drawergeeks this week. Go and check it out there's a ton of great stuff on there. It was fun to do this sketch as I've done little for myself lately except random doodles on a few floating pieces of paper here and there. It just make me realize though that I'm not drawing for fun enough. I am SO glad and SO blessed that everything I have been working on is actual work, but there are times when my enjoyment in sitting down at my drawing table is all but lost. So I need to consciously make an effort to do that, but with so much on my plate(work, wedding, and future move to Texas....all within the next 2 months) it's hard to find the time. |

| An old illustration..... |
[Mar. 6th, 2008|01:36 pm] |
for a new blog.

I drew this awhile ago for the awesome site Drawergeeks hosted by a buddy of mine Greg Hardin. I've only done another mediocre Godzilla, but I'm trying to get back into the game of drawing for myself more, so expect a new one tomorrow. I've been so busy and extremely neglectful of this poor blog. I promise more in the next few days.........and then I'll forget about it again. In the meantime enjoy this old illo. HIGH FIVE everyone! |

| sorry...... |
[Jan. 13th, 2008|11:16 pm] |
real sorry for the lack of update lately folks...for the past few months I've been working my tail off on a few things and I'm still a long way off from finishing things up. I just finished an issue of Sabrina the Teenage With for Archie comics and I had a lot of fun with the project. I'm doing the follow up issue as well as taniadelrio takes a break for a bit. There are about 3 or 4 different things I'm juggling at the same time right now too and I think I'm starting to realize how much I can and can't take on all at once. I'm a bit over worked at the moment, and yet none of it has been a personal project at all. Jil and I are in the home stretch for the wedding and it can't come soon enough really. We've sent out Save the Dates and are heading up to Michigan this weekend for a shower for Jil(the invite above). Jil set up a a cute little website for us to help with registry and stuff. I need to get on there and fill in a few things sometime soon. |

This is how I'll remember you. I've read Spider-man since I was 8(and for the record I stopped buying this crap months ago). But these developments are keeping me off for the foreseeable future. |

| Christmas time is the BEST! |
[Dec. 12th, 2007|12:28 pm] |
To you: An overly eclectic mix of completely non traditional Christmas songs.
I have close to a good 200 Christmas songs now that I've collected over the years and collected into a mean 5 disc set at this point. A lot of traditional ones and a ton of crazy indie stuff. What are your favorite Christmas songs? Post a list! Anything I HAVE to hear right now? I'm always looking for more! |

| Tutorial for Nathan! |
[Dec. 3rd, 2007|01:25 pm] |
WAAAaaay back in June at Heroes I got the chance to meet a young guy named Nathan who really seemed to love my work. He's asked in the past for some simple tutorials on my Fox and Goat characters from my Sushi Bar mini. I've never really done tutorials before or step by steps but I'm glad to show some simple steps in my so called process. I'm a lot less patient when drawing my characters sometimes. I rarely break it down and build up like this but I have a feeling it would help a bit...;)...so first off FOX and then Goat.... First I break the body down into it's most basic shapes. Fox has more of a squat head so I stick with a circle and then kind of a tear drop/oval body.
Next add some minor details and the arms and legs. Just put in the basic shapes again. No need to clutter it up yet with fingers and hair. Fox's head gets a little more squat when adding his "whiskers" and the ears run round from the original circle. Maybe some eyebrows to get the expression going and then move on to...
the fun parts. Get the pupils settled in and add the scruff around his arms and feet. Fox's mouth is wide and cuts sharp at the lip for his chin and nose.
Everything is pretty much set now...just finish the lines up nice and bold. And darken up his ears, hands , and feet. Done. I hope that helps! I'm not much of a process guy.
so now onto.... |

| | What's This?! - Nightmare Before Christmas | ] | I'm sitting here on this nice Monday morning with The Nightmare Before Christmas playing and I figure it's time to update! Wizard World Texas went really well. Jil and I had a blast visiting family and friends and I did pretty darn well at the show if I do say so myself. We spent two days before the show looking around the area and scoping out places we may or not be interested in living sometime down the road. We really liked Plano(where her sister is) and Richardson(where my aunt and uncle are) the best. It was really great to see my friends Kristian and PJ again as well as get to know PJ's roommate Jon real well.
The show started later on Friday this year and although I did very well in artists alley the floor was pretty bare. Overall thought the whole weekend went WAAaaay better than my time in Heroes and Chicago together. I was booked up on sketches early in the morning each day and sold the majority of everything I brought. It was great seeing folks I had met last year and doing some more sketches for them as well as getting to talk some about this and that. I walked out without having spent a dime, which it turns out was the best move as my crappy wacom board finally kicked the bucket so I had to drop a ton to snag a new one. so far I love it. But boy it would have been nice to have that money for Christmas shopping.
Jil and I were back for a day before we left again to head to Michigan(and then her to Chicago) for Thanksgiving. It was nice to have a little break after the crazy busy week prior. I've got a quite a few things lined up for the next two months which will be nice since my bank account is bare bones at the moment. Plus once the dust settles from that I should be able to break full time into some new Sea Monsters work as well as get married! I can't believe it's right around the corner!
I'll pop on again throughout the week. I hope everyones having a fantastic December so far! My Christmas mix has reached 5 discs and I'm making my way through my favorite Christmas related movies as I type. And I turn 27 in 2 days! My LATE 20's! Oh my! |

| Hello. My name is Chad, and I run this blog. |
[Nov. 10th, 2007|06:54 pm] |
Sorry for the complete silence for the past month and a half. After Jil and I got engaged work piled up and kept me plenty busy. Unfortunately everything I was working on was kind of boring and a bit stifling creatively. It made me just want to step away from the table instead of draw for fun.........plus I kind of started to play Warcraft again(the middle one is my old character from before I quit....the shammy and lock are new). BUT....Jils comic is inked and all set and ready for public consumption. Next week we'll both be attending Wizard World in Texas and I'll have her book simply titled Run, Sushi Bar, and the last remaining Sea Monsters & Samurai. Last remaining you say? Whatever could that mean? Well folks as of this week I'm thrilled to say Sea Monsters & Samurai will be published by the esteemed Viper Comics in the future! Future being most likely late next year and in graphic novel form, but for those of you who were awesome enough to snag the mini originally I'm sorry to say you're going to have to wait just a bit longer. No date is set but it's at least something you all can look forward to in late 2008. I'll make an effort to post again with some art, but probably not until after Thanksgiving. The next two weeks are all travel for Jil and I. When I get back I plan on getting into the swing of things by wrapping up the questions some of you have asked me and some new genre sketches. Keep an eye open! |

| Question # 3! |
[Sep. 17th, 2007|10:38 pm] |
I was gone for a tiny bit up in Michigan....and now I'm back. So here's a cartoon for akoyamiazaki. Last week Jil and I decided we needed to get up to Michigan to book a place for wedding. It was a last minute trip so we had a lot of rushing around to get things in order before we left. Plus both of us were coming down with a little something. I fought mine off ok pretty early but poor Jil got the brunt of it. I looked at a really cool french manor looking place just outside of town, and while it would have been really gorgeous outside, the inside was just WAAAaaaay to antique-y. Mom and Jil thought it had some charm but I thought the interior was downright ugly. We then jotted on over to a little cafe for breakfast and ended up at a little farm called Southern exposure, which is where we'll be getting married. It was quite a site and Jil fell in love with it immediately so it was kind of a no brainer after that. So in about 8 months Jil and I will be getting married here. And if outside doesn't work they have a fantastic plan B that we're really happy with. We're doing our best to really make this a wedding that really reflects our taste. During the planning we've been looking at as many alternative ideas(and coming up with a few of our own) to make it special to us and a ceremony and reception that our guests won't forget. I can't believe how fast this stuff moves. We had been engaged in less than a week and already we have the date, place, honeymoon, and photographer booked, a nearly finalized guest list, music pretty much done, and reception guest favors in the making. I have a feeling we'll be done in a month and then will get to sit on our hands for 7 months before tying the knot. Which will only serve to drive us crazy. There are so many other things that will be going on during that time too like moving and getting a new apartment. And new jobs! Here's to hoping I will have a flood of freelance at the end of May! Hell, hopefully the flood will happen before so we can have some cushion while we get settled. I'll keep things updated around here. More Questions to come! Feel free to ask some more! |

| Sure to be controversial! Question #1! |
[Sep. 11th, 2007|11:51 pm] |
This was a fun exercise. It's been a long time since I've ever just done a quick sketch comic...since college I think! It will be nice to do some more of these. Thanks chamonkee for the incredibly challenging question! I'll be doing a lighter question to get away from this more serious one. I'm still totally accepting questions for those who would like to ask me one so ask away! And here's a more "mainstream" Batman sketch for the hell of it... |

| | Nada Surf - Paper Boats | ] | So flamingwingnut started doing some comics answering peoples questions they had about himself. He's following in the footsteps of chamonkee and passive_mission and I'm sure many before. Seeing as how the last two weeks have been like pulling teeth to get some solid lines on paper I figured this would be a fun exercise for me to do in the morning. They were limiting questions to 5. I'll be bold enough to say 10, or at least UP till 10 since I really dunno how many folks will want to know THAT much about me. And maybe we'll see how it goes and move on from there.

We used to play Heroclix together..... yeah that's right nick...I said it....Heroclix....I have pictures but.....I can't find them...someday...when you least expect it...they WILL come back to haunt you. |

| Chattanooga Day Trip! |

Last Saturday Jil and I (in the back!) had the pleasure to meet up with Chris Schweizer and his lovely wife Liz (in the front!) in Chattanooga. We've been talking about trying to find a good time to meet up every now and then and Chattanooga is really a perfectly reasonable drive for all of us to meet and a city with plenty to do. We ended up going to Ruby Falls which leaned towards the cheesy side of tourism unfortunately, but Chris and I both took some pictures of a lot of cave details that I think we'll both be able to use for some reference. It's just too bad sometimes when the wonderful spectacle of a beautiful underground waterfall isn't spectacle enough so we have to jazz it up with some cliche crescendo music with a big light reveal. That said...it was a beautiful sight...but hard to enjoy when you're with a group of 40 people and being rushed and squeezed past 4 other groups of 40 people all the while losing some of the quiet intimacy that these cool underground caves can provide.
Afterwards we spent some time in some great used bookstores; where I grabbed a fantastic book on Samurai warfare and history. We walked around the city for a bit, ate, and then split up exhausted. I'm hoping to go back within the next month to spend a long day in their aquarium taking pictures and drawing some detailed fish and coral.
This week has been alright so far. I've been really antsy and have had a hell of a time sitting still to draw. I snagged Heroes on dvd today so I think that'll help keep me in one place while I get some commissions done. I have a true love/ hate relationship with the show, but holding the collectors set from Target gets me pretty pumped to rewatch it again. It IS a fun show, and I certainly have some gripes(don't even get me started), but I still watched the entire thing and am looking forward to season 2.
I can't leave you guys hanging with 0 art so here's a super quick pin up I did for Viper comics new Expendable One mini series. It was great they asked me to provide something, I just hope they dug it. I think it may already be out actually. I'll post some more stuff later this week. I've had my hands full the past few weeks with one extremely tedious job and another fun one for some clients around town. |

| Stuff I bought this week.... |
[Aug. 23rd, 2007|09:55 pm] |
|
Welcome to the first of many "Stuff I bought". "Stuff" referring to comic titles mainly. I thought I'd give some folks an idea of what I'm really enjoying right now and reading on a regular basis. Don't expect this weekly...I hit up the shop once a month if I'm lucky. This will probably round out the month for now.
Fables # 64...I'm in love with this book, and everytime I pick it up it goes straight to the top the the reading pile. I wasn't super crazy about guest artist Alexovich's stuff at first. Buckingham is a hard act to follow after all, but it really shined in places like the intro of the cubs and the stalking of Bigby.
