Warm Up - 09/04/09 [Sep. 4th, 2009|10:51 am]
tauren

And as the week wraps up here is a Tauren Druid by request.  I like this one ok...although I wish his tree staff looked less like a tree a bit, and I think it gets a little busy in places.  But that's what warm ups are for!  I also drew it landscape so click for a bigger view.  These have been a lot of fun to do!  I'll continue to do some more races and classes next week for warm ups so hopefully I can keep this up. Have a great weekend!

Warm Up - 09/02/09 [Sep. 2nd, 2009|10:43 am]
Troll

And morning warm ups continue!  I have a full plate today so I'm glad I squeezed this in.  Happy New Comic Day everyone!  My plans are to pick up Strange Tales, Wednesday Comics, and Ultimate Spider-man.  Kibuishi's Amulet drops today too and while I'm very excited to get it I might save that one for another week when nothing else I'm interested in hits the stands.

Gonna stick with the Warcraft theme for awhile like a super nerd.  I HATE Undead Rogues...why did I bother to draw one?!

Monday Sketch [Aug. 31st, 2009|03:43 pm]

orc

Sorry for late updates.  I've been busy finishing teaching art classes and adjusting to Jils new school schedule.  I've been thumbnailing and trying to get to as much Sea Monster stuff as I can while juggling a few other things I have on my plate.  In the meantime instead of doing dailies(pardon the WoW speak) I thought I'd whip up some Warcraft related stuff for my morning warm ups.  First up...an Orc Warrior!  I play Alliance mostly so these have been fun to draw up for a change.  I realize it could use some clean up but screw it...just wanted to get something up here for a change.

Salem # 4 hit COMIC hops TODAY.  It'll hit all the Borders and Newstands on August 11th.  Check it out now!  And for appearances sake here's the issue 4 cover!  ALSO...I've added the Salem issues and the small color previews in the Young Salem section of my site so check a few things out there.  I'm away for a busy weekend but I'll be back and drawing early next week!

Oh Hi.  Yeah, go here now!  I'll try and keep posting here the same time I do the new site but I MIGHT get a little lazy.  But I AM back and working hard.  See you soon!

mythology! [Oct. 7th, 2008|07:19 pm]

I drew Thor yesterday.  No crazy colors or anything...I'm not much of a colorist anyway...I just wanted to get something up on this ol blog besides the increasingly rare twitter updates.  Jil is super sick!  I am feeding her sudaphed by the spoonfull.

Not really.

School is awesome for her and she is now known as "Mrs. the lady whose husband draws cartoons" to those who aren't her students.  She's beginning her new unit on Greece soon and I'm in the mood to draw some Greek monsters.  First up...

THIS guy.  I'm working on a Medusa and Minotaur too.  What else should I do?  I'm increasingly enjoying inking in Manga Studio.  I'm still a bit slow with the program and have a lot to learn about everything I can do but I really love it.  I need to pick up a real brush and pen again though and actually increase my ability in that too though...I feel slightly guilty I haven't!

Who's ready for the debate?  huh?  huh?  I wonder if I'll recognize anyone in the forum.  I'm happy to have moved away from TN but it would be so cool to have gone to the Obama rally tonight.  I hope he does well tonight.

Ok back to work for me!  I have thumbnails to do!

Been a bit busy.... [Sep. 22nd, 2008|09:38 pm]

The past few weeks have been pretty jam packed and  haven't put anything up on this journal except twitter posts(which I've now just deleted since it was an entirely useless page of them).  I put this totoro piece together last night.  I'm don't think I'm great with color and I tried a few different things and I think it came out nicely.  I'll try to post more if I can.  I have a stack of pages that need finishing.  Once I get those out of the way I promise I'll be back with some more sketches and drawerings.  Enjoy fall!

This is what's up.... [Sep. 1st, 2008|04:38 pm]
Aaahhh what a nice relaxing weekend...

Jil and I had a great three days off just enjoying the slightly(barely) cooling weather and watching movies.  She had never seen Bottle Rocket so we sat down and took that in post King of Kong the other night as well.  Work is going well as I thumbed some more S&S and got a hefty start on a new project with Archie Comics.  It's nice to have her around on today(Monday) but it's hard to get to work when you just wanna hang out with your best friend.

A few things....

1) Don't expect to find me on this list.  If you think I'm paying $200 for a table then think again Wizard.  I've really LOVED setting up at this show for the last few years and have met so many amazing people, however...I won't have anything new to show unless I'm able to get some prints up...and there's just no way I'm paying that much for a 4 foot space.  It's really disappointing too since I was really looking forward to the show.  I don't exactly think I'll be missed really...but it'll suck not having a stationary place where I can just relax and see some friends I usually only run into at cons.  But for those of you setting up good luck!  I WILL be making it to the show to at least buy all your comix.

2)  I get to be in Parable vol. 2!  I'm super excited!

3)  OMG Super Mario RPG on VC?  See you in a few weeks.  Also.....Okami continues to rock me in the face.  Repeatedly.

4)  I broke down...but mostly to keep up with all of the twittering.  Does anybody wanna....follow...me?.......or something.

A few things... [Aug. 30th, 2008|12:04 am]

Jil and I finally got around to seeing King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters which was a w e s o mmmmmm e.  What a great little documentary.  Definitely worth seeing if you haven't yet(and most likely you have....we're a bit behind in the times).  We've decided we want to write hate mail to Billy and his lackey(name escaping me).  I didn't know cartoon villains from the 80's existed in REAL life!
I was trolling around looking for good new music on myspace and came across these guys....wow.  My new favorite thing.

I'm getting curious about this twitter thingamabob all you kids are into.  Worth it or waste of my time?

DNC closing prayer... [Aug. 27th, 2008|03:50 pm]
I don't talk about my faith and its importance to me on this blog very much at all, but this closing prayer from Donald Miller I think is something worth sharing. Via a buddy of mine.

“Father God, This week, as the world looks on, help the leaders in this room create a civil dialogue about our future.  We need you, God, as individuals and also as a nation. We need you to protect us from our enemies, but also from ourselves, because we are easily tempted toward apathy. Give us a passion to advance opportunities for the least of these, for widows and orphans, for single moms and children whose fathers have left. Give us the eyes to see them, and the ears to hear them, and hands willing to serve them. Help us serve people, not just causes. And stand up to specific injustices rather than vague notions. Give those in this room who have power, along with those who will meet next week, the courage to work together to finally provide health care to those who don’t have any, and a living wage so families can thrive rather than struggle. Help us figure out how to pay teachers what they deserve and give children an equal opportunity to get a college education. Help us figure out the balance between economic opportunity and corporate gluttony. We have tried to solve these problems ourselves but they are still there. We need your help.

Father, will you restore our moral standing in the world. A lot of people don’t like us but that’s because they don’t know the heart of the average American. Will you give us favor and forgiveness, along with our allies around the world. Help us be an example of humility and strength once again.

Lastly, father, unify us. Even in our diversity help us see how much we have in common. And unify us not just in our ideas and in our sentiments—but in our actions, as we look around and figure out something we can do to help create an America even greater than the one we have come to cherish. God we know that you are good.

Thank you for blessing us in so many ways as Americans. I make these requests in the name of your son, Jesus, who gave his own life against the forces of injustice. Let Him be our example.

Amen.”

And more other stuff.... [Aug. 22nd, 2008|02:19 pm]
I'm seriously dying for new tv season.  I do a lot of work with tv dvds in the background or a hulu queue on throughout the day.  I've pretty much exhausted my pile of dvds at this point and anything I've enjoyed on Hulu has run dry.  I tried out some new stuff and I must say I was wrong about Psych...that show is actually pretty funny.  I don't love it...but an episode or two ago had me laughing pretty hard.  I've been putting on a handful of Rifftrax lately which has been a lot of fun, but I'm looking forward to having Chuck or Pushing Daisies back on soon.  There are so many more to look forward to but I could go for those two right now for some reason.

Jil and I are watching Rome together via netflix and finished the first season the other day.  Overall we really liked it.  I didn't love it like I expected to but I thought it was pretty expertly done overall.  I guess I expected a few more battles and a little less politics.  I know they were totally on a budget but i couldn't help groaning every time someone mentioned going to war and then a minute later the battle has passed off screen.  I'm thinking of starting Burn Notice right now....any other suggestions?

And for fun....in no particular order....pretty much everything I watch(ed) regularly and enjoy...guilty pleasures and all....

Other stuff.... [Aug. 22nd, 2008|01:09 pm]

In the latest Chad time waster news I bring you something you all probably all know about.  I just finished the old Metroid Prime from the Gamcube since I had never been able to get my hands on it before, so now I moved on to Okami.  I can't even begin to describe how gorgeous this game is.  It's kind of a must play for any artist whether on a PS2 or a Wii.  It has a strong showing in style, gameplay, story and music and has sucked me in.  I've been good about quitting when i have to, but a good game makes me want to keep playing...Okami succeeds.

Jil starts teaching on Monday!  It's been a crazy week for her just getting ready and it's going to get even crazier when she starts but she's really looking forward to getting into a good class routine.  She had an open house for 6th graders to come to on Wednesday and it really motivated her.  The district she teaches in has a really strong curriculum so even though she'll have her hands full with plenty of other things she won't be as overwhelmed with that as she could have been.  It's been a nice summer having her around so much, I'll miss seeing her throughout the day but it's nice to know I have her coming home to look forward to.

And lastly....I'm ashamed to say I've had this on my desktop for like...the past two weeks....and now that it's totally not a thing....here you go...Creepy Anime Chad.

Upcoming.... [Aug. 22nd, 2008|12:39 pm]

Here are some designs for a new project(I've been told to keep this relatively untitled but sharing some character designs won't harm anything) I'm starting today.  I'm pretty darn excited about it as I've been given a lot of rope creatively and the writer is both hands on and open with some very fun ideas.  I'm glad I got some good headway on Seamonsters & Samurai before this got going.  I'll keep posting some thumbs and designs as I keep going!

Fanart [Aug. 11th, 2008|07:58 pm]

One of my very favorite books right now.  I got into Usagi Yojimbo later than I'd like(although I STILL have the old Usagi Ninja Turtle toy!), but I'm definitely glad I've found it now.  It's been a great read and series to catch up on over the past few months but I still have a long way to go!  No spoilers!  It's been a great resource and example of all things storytelling and samurai, so it's been a real treat.  I know [info]usagiguy lurks around here too so lemme take a quick moment to say thanks!  :)  Oookay....back to thumbnails and maybe a little Strong Bad perhaps?  Yes.  I think Strong Bad.

These are some character designs for a story I may or may not do depending on approval (I'm looking at YOU Mike!) Other than that Sea Monster thumbs are coming along quite nicely.  I've also gotten some strong feedback from Chris that helped me really think about certain plot elements and character motivation from a different angle.  Chris has always been a huge supporter of everything I've done and has been a big encouragement in the whole process.  I had the pleasure to sit down and read his book Crogan's Vengeance which will be coming out from Oni in the fall and let me tell you it is just fantastic.  Don't hesitate in picking it up, I promise you won't be disappointed.  I'm going to go watch me some Mythbusters!  Have a nice Sunday afternoon!

Back in the saddle again.... [Aug. 5th, 2008|12:58 am]

After a year of getting engaged, married, moving to Texas, and taking on an obscene amount of work to keep up with it all....I'm finally back at work on Sea Monsters & Samurai.  I'm going through the motions right now refining old character designs and plot.  I think the months away did a lot of good as I was beginning to realize how a lot of character motivation just wasn't completely there yet.  I still have a few things coming up the pike that'll slow things down but I'm in a good groove for now and I'm really excited about seeing this completed.

I just picked up Eureka and have been really enjoying it so far as I try and catch up with the current seasons.  I had gotten the feeling from a random 5 minutes I watched awhile back that it wasn't up my alley but I'm pretty darned glad I'm giving it a second shot.  The Middleman is another great piece of entertainment that I've gotten caught up on over the past two weeks and I'm glad I did.   [info]chaodai has created an awesome universe for this show and a solid cast.  I'm really hoping we see more of it after season one.

That's all for now.  I have a stack of stuff I need to get round to scanning and I'll get it up soon!
